Despite Brexit, despite travel restrictions, the Spanish property market is still a big draw for Brits. Demand for properties in Spain has been at the highest since 2015!
The impact of lockdown has made many families re-evaluate their living and working conditions and find spaces that give them more light, space and a better climate. Properties in Costa Blanca are very popular with luxury residences on Mallorca also being a big draw for Brits too with its spectacular scenery.
“British appetite for Spanish second homes is well and truly alive once more. After multiple lockdowns, and now with far greater freedom to work away from the office, we’re seeing families rush to turn their dreams of owning a home in Spain into a reality.”
Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director of Taylor Wimpey España

Here are our top 7 reasons why you should consider buying in Spain in 2022.
1. Spanish property is a good investment for UK buyers
Although there was a dip in house buying, interest is growing. Top-quality key ready properties are widely available. There has also never been so much choice. From townhouses to contemporary penthouse apartments. Properties with communal outdoor areas or a private beachfront and garden. For Brits looking to enjoy a more outdoor living, Spain has the climate and stunning landscapes and beaches too.
Property around the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and across the Balearics have always been popular and despite all the shocks to travel with the pandemic, interest is still high in the area. Spain’s strong tourism economy means that any buy-to-let properties will do well.
By choosing an agent with experience in the Spanish market, you can find a property that suits your needs and will also hold its value.
2. Make energy savings
Spanish home builders are moving with the times and improving their green credentials. There is a real focus on creating energy-efficient key-ready homes that make the most of the sunlight for power and heat. With features like solar panels and large windows now being made a priority on new builds, buyers can expect good EPCs when they purchase.
“A good energy performance rating is a win on all fronts. It shows that the property’s environmental impact will be minimal in terms of its energy consumption, and it reassures owners in terms of their bills. It’s something that we focus on very carefully for each of the developments that we design and build.”

3. The perfect climate
According to Property Investor Today, Spanish enquiries for properties are up 16% with Brits still looking for holiday homes to escape the cold British winters and increasing costs of heating. The great year-round mild Mediterranean climate and low rainfall make it an ideal location to enjoy outdoor activities like golf.
4. Remote locations
If you want to stay out of the hustle and bustle, then Spain has a wide choice of holiday properties in rural locations which are still accessible to city centres and airports. There are lots of new developments and resorts which give you spacious accommodation, stunning landscape and have the benefit of being situated in a peaceful location away from the main cities.
Having a property in the sun with space both inside and out for you and your family to enjoy, especially if there are any future lockdowns is incredibly appealing for British buyers right now.
5. An idyllic lifestyle
Spain offers not just a great climate, but every area offers wonderful food, culture and activities. The Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Cadiz, Ibiza and Mallorca all offer unique elements, which means you can find the perfect location no matter what your interests.
Choose from properties in developments near traditional villages, on stunning golf courses in the bucolic countryside or a villa right on the beach.
6. Working from home abroad
For those of us working from home, we have realised that we want better working conditions, more space, more light, and more outdoor time during the day to connect with nature. Imagine having a second home to work from and being able to take your coffee break overlooking the beach, or have lunch in a Spanish village?
“The idea of owning a property overseas is gaining traction with many families looking to rebalance their lifestyle post-pandemic.”
Marc Pritchard, Sale & Marketing Director, Taylor Wimpey España
In September 2021, Taylor Wimpey España reported that they had a record-breaking number of reservations for their properties in mainland Spain and the Balearics.
New key-ready developments are designed to maximise light, space with high-speed internet, ideal for working from home. Plus with golf courses, the sea, and outdoor activities, you can enjoy quality downtime in stunning locations.
7. Stay for 3 months at a time
Brexit has meant that the length of time that Britons can stay has reduced to 90-days in a 180 day period – however that will still see you through the worst of the winter months.
However, there is also the option of applying for a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) residence card if you are thinking of retiring. Or if you are spending over £425,000 you can apply for a Golden Visa which has no limits on how long you can stay.
These types of visas are also applicable to the entire family and dependents.
“British families with a golden visa are no longer trapped by the restrictions placed on tourist visas. They can spend as much time in Spain as they wish. Or as little – they only need to visit Spain once per calendar year. There is no obligation to spend more than six months in Spain, so they can avoid being taxed as Spanish residents if they prefer.”
César Garzón, Principal, Spanish Lawyer
Thankfully the process to apply for a visa is relatively simple and quick.
